Description
Harbour construction. Diver working on the construction of the harbour in Haifa on the Mediterranean coast. He is wearing a weighted diving suit and helmet, with air supplied to the helmet from the surface through a tube. Self-contained breathing apparatus (scuba equipment or aqualung) wasn't invented until the 1940s. The construction of this harbour took place from 1922 to 1933. At that time, Haifa was part of the British Mandate of Palestine. It is now part of modern-day Israel. Photographed by the American Colony Photo Department, based in Jerusalem.
